Life Works- A Self-Sufficiency Program

Applications for Life Works

Life Works accepts applications at any time throughout the year.

Life Works supports individuals and families in Madison, Buncombe, and McDowell Counties who live on limited incomes. Participants work to complete their goals in one to three years.

During this time they:

  • Secure and retain sustainable employment
  • Attain educational/vocational training
  • Learn to make better use of available income
  • Obtain and maintain standard housing
  • Build self-esteem and strong work ethics

Life Coaches guide and support participants and help them remove the obstacles and solve the problems that cause poverty.

Life Works strengthens support networks between community programs, businesses and colleges in order to increase participants' life skills and employment options.

American Public Human Services Association issued a brief on Social Return on Investment recognizing the Life Works Program evaluates and communicates the value and cost-effectiveness of the program; producing important reliable and "defendable" program results.

Additional Services that Support Families

  • Nurturing Parenting
In partnership with Buncombe County Health and Human Services, the Agency operates Nurturing Parenting, an evidence based program for the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. This is a fee based service. Most of the available training space is filled with referrals from Buncombe County and the Life Works Program.
  • Community Response
This three year grant project is funded by the Children’s Trust Fund in partnership with Buncombe County Health and Human Services. Families with children in the home, birth to three years of age, who are at or below 100% of poverty, and referred by the Under Six Outreach Workers at Buncombe County Health and Human Services are eligible to receive up to six months of intensive case management by a Community Response Coach. The Coach works closely with families to enhance protective factors to prevent child abuse and neglect.
